Ichikawa Danjuro as Soga Goro Tokimune, 1882

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro as Soga Goro Tokimune in the drama "Ya-no-ne" (The Arrowhead). He grips an enormous arrow, staring fiercely ahead with an angry grimace, wearing a kimono patterned with his trademark butterflies. His flared wig and red stage makeup adds to his imposing appearance. The background features an oversized white peony at right, bordered with the three concentric rice measure crest used by the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors. A great, bold design, beautifully detailed with burnishing on the arrow shaft and the black areas of the kimono, and touches of metallic pigment that have oxidized to a dark tone.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Slight soiling, offsetting, slight glue residue and rubbing at upper left corner of right panel. Please see photos for details.
