by Sadahide (1807 - 1873)
Comments - Incredible winter battle scene of Minamoto no Yoshitsune's troops fighting against warrior monks at Yoshino Temple on Mt. Yoshino. At right, the famed samurai Sato Tadanobu leaps off a pagoda to do battle with Yokawa Kakuhan. He has disguised himself by wearing Yoshitsune's armor, allowing his master to escape safely. Gripping his sword upright, he falls through the air towards his enemies. Kakuhan glares up at him, waiting with his naginata in both hands, while fighting continues on the snowy slope below him. Atop a mountain at upper left, a few samurai watch the action. A dynamic composition with wonderful detail and a terrific mountain setting. A great subject for a samurai enthusiast.
