by Yoshitsuya (1822 - 1866)
Series; One-to-One Combats at the Great Battle of Kawanakajima
Yamagata Saburobei versus Watanabe, Governor Director of Etchu - Terrific scene from the famous Battle of Kawanakajima of Yamagata Saburobei fighting Watanabe, the governor director of Etchu, in hand-to-hand combat. The pair struggles on the stony shore of the river, gripping each other by the arms as they straight into each other's eyes with grim determination. Yamagata wears a horned battle helmet topped with a red sun above cresting waves, his enemy bare-headed. Watanabe's personal standard and his vest flutter in the wind, his eyes blazing. In the background, other warriors continue the fight. A great samurai print, wonderfully detailed and composed.
