Cherry Blossom Viewing at Toeizan Temple, Ueno, 1862 - Lovely triptych of people viewing the blossoming cherry trees at Ueno in Edo. In the center, three women play a hand game called ken, with a group of beauties carrying umbrellas at left pausing to look back and watch. At right, a woman in a checked coat carries a cup of sake and a gourd container, and a young child shows her mother a toy eye mask. At right, two boys chase each other up the stone steps leading up the hillside to the Toeizan Temple. A handsome design and a wonderful depiction of this classic spring activity in Japan.
