Burning Maple Leaves in the Forest, 1893 - Charming autumn triptych showing two beauties on a palace verandah under a maple tree, looking out at a group of palace guards gathered around a fire for a break. The men warm their hands over the burning maple leaves and enjoy a hot drink, their rakes and brooms set aside for the moment on the ground nearby. The women are beautifully dressed in elegant kimono over white robes tucked into red pants. Colorful red maple leaves drift over the scene, and a narrow stream flows through the landscape at left. Lovely color and detail in the fabrics and architectural setting, with embossing on the white kimono and the white robes of the guards, and burnishing on the black caps.
