Townspeople Watching the Noh Play Okina in Edo Castle, 1889 - Terrific triptych depicting a Noh theater performance of the drama "Okina" taking place in the courtyard of Edo Castle. An actor performs on stage at left, a row of drummers providing accompaniment behind him. At right, noblemen and retainers watch from inside a sumptuously furnished palace room, a sliding panel decorated with a tiger in a bamboo grove and a screen depicting a lion and red peonies. Below, commoners jammed into a fenced area jostle for a better view of the play, one man trying to climb over his companions while others accidentally poke each other with their umbrellas. Incredible architectural detail in this handsome print. Nicely detailed with touches of burnishing. A wonderful choice for a collector interested in Noh theater or upper-class life during the Edo era.
