by Yoshitsuya (1822 - 1866)
Series; One-to-One Combats at the Great Battle of Kawanakajima
Uesugi Kagetora versus Baba, Governor Director of Mino , 1857 - Great image of Uesugi Kagetora in hand-to-hand combat with Baba, the governor director of Mino, during the Battle Kawanakajima. The young Kagetora leans forward at left, his long hair flowing loosely over his shoulders as he grabs his enemy in the around the neck in a headlock. Baba glares back at him with bulging eyes, trying to pry his attacks arms away from him. The rocky shore is littered with abandoned weapons, and two warriors run at each other in the background, holding a sword and spear high. A terrific samurai subject from this historic conflict, with wonderfully expressive faces and fine detail in the armor and weapons.
