Heavy: the appearance of a Fukagawa waitress in the Tempo era, No. 12 - Charming design of a busy waitress carrying a large portable wooden table, the "heavy" reference of the title. She works at a restaurant in the Fukagawa pleasure district, an area of teahouses, restaurants, and brothels that enjoyed great popularity during the Tempo era. Her tray is laden with food in elegant porcelain and lacquer containers, suggesting an expensive occasion such as a geisha party. A few loose wisps of hair frame her face, and her intricately cross-hatched kimono is somewhat rumpled, suggesting the strain of her work. Beautifully detailed. An excellent lithograph edition of this famous design.
