Series; Thirty-Two Aspects of Women
Strolling: the appearance of an upper-class wife of the Meiji era, No. 32 - Lovely portrait of an up-to-date, upper-class wife enjoying a stroll through an iris garden. She is dressed in the latest western fashions, with a bustled dress, large bow tie, and straw hat trimmed with feathers and flowers. The rosy plum of her gown harmonizes beautifully with the gorgeous purple and white iris blossoms, the veining of the flowers delicately embossed. This design proved one of the most popular of the series with the Japanese Meiji audience, and continues to delight viewers today with the exotic mix of Western and Japanese tradition. A beautiful reprint published in 1977 by Sodosha in Tokyo.
