Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Kabuki Characters, 1889

Comments - Terrific Chikanobu kabuki design showing a group of kabuki actors in character with a banzuke or list of names across the top. At lower right, a wild-haired warrior in armor grips a naginata as he looks over his shoulder. At bottom center, the hero from the play "Shibaraku!" (Wait a Minute!) wears a voluminous rust colored robe, his red stage makeup giving him a fierce appearance. Just above, a wild-haired samurai grips a large axe with a flame painted on the head, throwing his arm out at his side. Nice expressive figures set off by the deep red background.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14" x 27 1/2" + margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few losses and wormholes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
