Series; Thirty-two Faces, New Edition, 1882

Thirty-two Faces, New Edition - Intriguing woodblock from a series by Kiyochika illustrating various facial expressions, emotional states, and occupations. Each design features four bust-length portraits, portraying men, women and children in a highly realistic manner. The success of Kiyochika's 1882 series, "Thirty-two Faces, New Edition" led to the creation of a supplement in 1883 depicting an additional hundred faces. Today, prints from both series are fairly rare. Carefully observed and drawn, these expressive and colorful designs provide an interesting record of the human condition.
