Comments - Lovely portrait of a courtesan sitting on a cloud and playing the biwa or Japanese lute, a sash fluttering about her head, appearing as a Tennin or heavenly Buddhist spirit. Her outer kimono is patterned with the white wigs and peony blossom headgear and butterflies associated with the lion dance, trimmed with green and worn over a white under robe with an embossed diamond pattern. A feather robe hangs from a pine branch at right, and cherry blossoms and petal are scattered across the background. A beautiful Edo era design by this master of bijin-ga or portraits of beautiful women.
