Series; Exploits of the Tokugawa Clan

Toyo Shonin of Daiju Temple Inscribing a Banner, 1875 - Interesting scene of Toyo Shonin, the master of Daiju Temple, the family temple of the ancestor of the Tokugawa, writing a teaching on a banner. When Tokugawa Ieyasu was nineteen, he contemplated committing ritual suicide at the temple. The temple's then-master Toyo Shonin wrote the words "Onri Edo Gongu Jodo" (Renounce the depraved land, pursue a world of peace) on a sheet and gave it to the young samurai. The phrase deterred Ieyasu from killing himself, and it became his motto. Here, the priest leans over as he writes, other samurai leaning over his shoulder and watching closely. An intriguing design from this rarely seen Yoshitoshi series.
