The Great Battle of Awazugahara, 1867

Comments - Terrific depiction from the Battle of Awazugahara of the woman warrior Tomoe-gozen on a dappled horse, taking a brief break on a hilltop as the battle continues along the shore below. Her armor is pierced with arrows, and she is bleeding from several wounds, and the blade of her naginata is also covered in blood. The warrior at left rests his hands atop a bloody sword, looking up with a fierce, defiant expression as his hair blows in the wind. He is wounded in both legs, blood staining his armor. At right, a samurai kneels alongside a stream to fill his hat with water. Pine trees frame the sky as the sun sets along the horizon. A fantastic portrait of the famous Tomoe-gozen in the midst of battle, with a striking natural setting.
