The 47 Ronin, Act 2, circa 1806 - Wonderful early Hokusai scene of Act 2 from the kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," based on the famous tale of the 47 ronin. At left, Honzo cuts a pine branch to signal his loyalty to his former master Wakasanosuke's plan to avenge Lord Moronao's offensive behavior toward Lady Kaoyo, the wife of Lord Hangan. At right, the young beauty Tonase smiles shyly into her sleeve as the handsome Oboshi Rikiya, the son of Oboshi Yuranosuke, delivers a message to the mansion. The house overlooks garden along the water's edge, with men working on a torii gate on the far shore, pine and blossoming cherry branches framing the scene. Nicely composed with a handsome setting. An interesting and unusual choice for a Hokusai collector.
