Series; Heroic Commoners in Kabuki

Nakamura Tsuruzo I as Tsuribune no Sabu, 1863 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Nakamura Tsuruzo I as fishing boat Sabu, looking to the side with a worried grimace, his arms folded across his chest. He wears a striking embossed shirt patterned with a dragon clutching a sacred jewel, the sleeves of his boldly patterned blue and white kimono pushed down to the waist. A tangles of ropes frames the scene at upper left, and the background is shaded from blue to white to green. A great expressive figure, beautifully detailed with additional embossing on the white areas of the kimono and a dusting of mica across the top of the sky.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/2" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at side from previous mounting. Spot. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
