Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Lady with a Lantern

Shima Art Company - Founded in 1908 in New York City by Kobe-born E. T. Shima, the Shima Art Company began publishing shin-hanga prints and ukiyo-reprints in the late 1920s, working with two companies in Japan to produce the woodblock prints. These lovely reprints accurately reproduce the fine line work and coloring of the original designs. Most bear the Shima seal, a crane with outstretched wings over Mt. Fuji. In 1940, the well-known Japanese print collector Robert O. Muller bought the company, renaming it the Robert Lee Gallery in October 1940. A great opportunity to add a classic ukiyo-e subject to your collection.

Comments - Attractive design of a beauty carrying a paper lantern, the sky darkening as evening falls. A beautifully colored and shaded image. With original mounting from the Shima Art Company, stamped "Made in Japan" on reverse of print.

Artist - Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)

Image Size - 4 1/8" x 6 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Attached at top edge to old backing, with title and artist in pencil beneath. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
