Comments - Interesting triptych divided diagonally to feature two scenes from a kabuki play. At left, the woman Tamazasa writes a long letter, pausing with the brush in hand as the paper trails over her lap, a lamp burning at her side. In the center, a couple pauses in the hallway of a teahouse, the samurai Otsuki Kurando looking soberly at the courtesan standing next to him. A matron watches them closely from the doorway at right, one handing resting on the sliding shoji screen. Her black kimono is burnished with a subtle geometric pattern and scattered with colorful blossoms. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke, Onoe Kikugoro, Sawamura Gennosuke, and Nakamura Sadanji. An intriguing subject with interesting Western perspective in the architectural setting and additional burnishing on the black kimono collars.
