Series; A New Group of Loyal Retainers

The 47 Ronin, Acts 1 and 2, 852 - Handsome uncut print featuring two chuban scenes from the "Chushingura," the tale of the 47 ronin. The top image depicts the helmet inspection at Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine in Act 1, where Lord Moronao attempts to pass Lady Kaoyo, Lord Hangan's wife, a love letter. Below, Act 2 shows the young samurai Oboshi Rikiya, the son of the ronin's leader Oboshi Yuranosuke, delivering a message to Lord Wakasanosuke's mansion. At left, the wife of Wakasanosuke's former retainer Honzo has contrived so that her daughter, Konami, greets the youth, hoping to encourage a romance between the two. Behind them, Honzo offers a cut pine branch to Lord Wakasanosuke to show his support for Wakasanosuke's vow to avenge the insulting behavior of Lord Moronao towards Lady Kaoyo. Nicely detailed settings framed by the ronin's traditional black and white dogtooth border and a blue border featuring crests.
