Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting a scene from the Genpei War, the great conflict between the Minamoto and Taira from 1180 to 1185. Here, a conflict takes place as an army gathers before battle. In the center, a warrior lunges at a samurai, pushing him by the shoulder to knock him off balance. The samurai struggles as he grips a pole arm thrust at him by a man who tumbles backwards at right, his other hand flung out in the air as he grimaces with rage. His eyes bulge and his hair sticks out wildly around his head. A group of defenders rushes forward at right with spears and swords drawn, while at left, a general on a dappled horse scowls as he waves his tasseled command baton, a bow in his other hand. Orange and brown smoke rises from bonfires, drifting across the night sky. At right, troops are seen in dark silhouette carrying standards and red lanterns on poles. Beautiful detail in the armor and large, expressive figures, with soft bokashi shading and handsome wood grain impression in the background. A terrific example of musha-e.
