Sumo Wrestler and Boatman Fighting, 1872

Comments - Great kabuki scene of a sumo wrestler fighting with a boatman. In the center, the wrestler grabs hold of the boatman's oar as he wields a sword with his other hand, frowning angrily. The boatman turns away with an enraged grimace, still gripping his oar. At left the geisha Ofuji watches with a worried expression. Buildings line the riverfront behind them, and a red glow spreads along the horizon as the sun sets. The actors include Bando Mitsugoro as the Ofuji and Nakamura Shikan as the wrestler. Nice large figures in a handsome setting, detail with fine line work in the hair and soft bokashi shading in the sky.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
