Moon Viewing Banquet at Yoshino Imperial Palace, 1888 - Fantastic triptych of a moon viewing banquet at the Imperial Palace in Yoshino of the exiled 14th century Emperor Go-Daigo. Forced out of Kyoto by the shogun Ashikaga Takeuji, Go-Daigo set up a southern court in the mountainous area of Yoshino, where he kept up many palace traditions, such as this moon viewing party. Here, the lady Onshaku no tsubone stands holding a broken saucer, which she compares to the shape of the moon rising above the pine trees. The emperor sits on a platform at right, his face concealed behind a hanging bamboo blind. A beautiful image of a popular court entertainment, with fantastic detail in the sumptuous fabrics and interior details. Includes faint embossing on the white kimono. Would make a terrific framed presentation.
