Prince Genji and Beauties Engaged in Sericulture

Comments - Interesting scene of Prince Genji arriving at a shop where beauties are engaged in sericulture, the ancient art of producing silk. He stands with one hand resting atop his palanquin at right, grinning as he looks up at a beauty in the center who holds a mulberry branch. Below, a woman chops mulberry leaves to feed the silkworms while a companion at lower left uses a feather to transfer eggs to a shallow tray. At upper right, two women are busying picking the cocoons from twigs. Warehouses line the street at right, and cranes fly through the sky above. A handsome design, wonderfully detailed. Includes a burnished checked pattern on Genji's black coat.
