Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Carrying Festival Decorations, 1859

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a group of men walking the street at night, the two fellows in the center carrying an enormous basket encircled with straw rope and filled with leafy ferns objects for a festival celebration, including a mask of Okame. The other men exchange angry grimaces, two of them holding up red paper lanterns with writing on them. At upper left, a man balances a filled wooden pail atop his head, glaring angrily as he looks to the side. An intriguing and unusual image with expressive figures and soft shading in the night sky.
