Villa of a Wealthy Family, 1889

Comments - Beautiful design of a young woman playing an unusual two-stringed instrument similar to a koto called a nigenkin. This rare instrument is only found in the Asakusa area of Tokyo, and became popular in the early Meiji era. The beauty kneels on the floor, gracefully moving a slide along the strings. In the center, a young child reaches eagerly for the visitor standing on a stepping stone in the garden. She holds her hands out in welcome as she waits under a blossoming cherry tree. A beautiful setting both inside and out, with a scroll on the wall depicting a carp and an elegant vase with an arrangement of blossoming magnolia branches. Beautifully detailed and colored. An intriguing subject for a collector interested in musical instruments.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14" x 28 1/4" + top margin as shown
