Sugino Jippeiji Tsugifusa and Hayami Tozaemon Mitsutaka, 1885 - Great double portrait of the two ronin Sugino Jippeiji Tsugifusa and Hayami Tozaemon Mitsutaka in the snow preparing for the night attack on Moronao's palace. One bends forward as he fastens his straw sandal, the blade of a small knife clenched between his teeth. His fellow samurai holds a lantern up into the night sky, shining a shaft of warm light. He wears a headband with what looks like a small round mirror on it. Both warriors wear beautifully detailed brocade kimono over armor and the ronin's trademark dogtooth bordered robes. A terrific design with large expressive figures from this rarely seen Kysosai series portraying the famous 47 ronin. Includes burnishing on the lantern.
