Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Portraits of Onoe and Iwafuji on Battledores, 1854

Comments - Handsome kabuki print featuring portraits on battledore-shaped insets. At left, the young lady-in-waiting Onoe looks up with a worried expression, clutching the collar of her outer robe. At right, the senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji glares back at her. Jealous of the beauty, Iwafuji is plotting to discredit her, a ploy that results in Onoe's tragic suicide. An interesting format, nicely detailed with burnishing on Iwafuji's black kimono.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 9 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
