Hiroshige’s Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido - In 1832, Hiroshige first traveled from his home in Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto along the Tokaido road. The journey was an eye opening and life changing experience for him. As an urban man of Edo he had experienced life mainly in the capital. He immediately returned to Edo after the trip and began his masterwork woodblock series from the sketches he had made on his journey. Hiroshige's Tokaido prints are an opportunity to be transported back in time to see this world as Hiroshige did in the shadow of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Night Snow at Kambara - Beautiful winter landscape of a few travelers making their way through the snow at Kambara. The rooftops of the quiet village are blanketed with snow, and flakes fall gently through the night sky. The figures provide the only notes of color in this otherwise monochromatic design, with masterful bokashi shading creating soft tones of gray and black. One of the most acclaimed works by Hiroshige, and a real masterpiece from this series. A lovely, peaceful scene.

This is a particularly beautiful reprint of this Hiroshige masterwork dating to the early 20th century. It would make an impressive display framed.
