Series; Edo Customs of the Twelve Months
Fifth Month: Planting Rice, 1889 - Beautiful Chikanobu design workers in the field planting rice in the fifth month of the year. At right, beauties traveling take a break under a tall pine tree to rest and watch the farm workers, one woman sitting on her trunks with a pipe in hand. At top right, a farmer plows a flooded field, while at left, women bend over, carefully placing the rice plants in the plowed paddies. At left, a man works a flood gate to provide water for the fields. A fascinating agricultural scene, with the fields spreading out into the distance. A handsome composition with wonderful detail and soft shading.
