Shinkyo Bridge, Nikko, 1937

Tsuchiya Koitsu - After moving to Tokyo at age fifteen, Koitsu studied for many years with the woodblock artist Kobayashi Kiyochika. Known for his beautiful landscape prints with a dramatic use of light and shade, Koitsu was one of the leaders of the shin-hanga or new print movement in 20th century Japan.

Comments - Beautiful view of the Shinkyo or Sacred Bridge that leads to the entrance of the shrine at Nikko during a light rain. The red-lacquered railings provide a bright contrast to the soft blue gray water of the river below and the lush green foliage of the forest at right. A lovely design, one of Koitsu's masterworks. A terrific choice for display.
