The Treaty in the Peach Orchard, 1885

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the historical tale "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," a story about the three warring kingdoms in China during the third century. This triptych illustrates the three leaders, Kwanu, Gentoku, and Chohi, meeting in the peach orchard to take an oath of brotherhood, swearing to serve each other and the state rather than continue fighting amongst themselves. The bearded warrior in the center holds a polearm above his back as he glares at the fellow at left. The nobleman at right regards them with an angry frown, his brows furrowed. At upper left, a table holds refreshments, and blossoming plum branches frame the red sky beyond curtains decorated with swirling clouds. A lively, colorful design with expressive figures.
