The Famous Naka-no-machi Quarter from Shin-Shimabara in Tokyo, 1869

Comments - Attractive scene of an elegantly dressed courtesan and her two kamuro or child apprentices strolling through the Naka-no-machi Quarter in Tokyo. She wears a striking outer kimono pattern with a dragon emerging from a rushing waterfall, and tall black geta clogs. Her hair is pulled back into a long ponytail tied with ornate bows and purple cloth. Teahouses line the street, and a servant can be seen balancing a low red lacquer table of food atop his head in the background at left. A charming subject.
