Shiraito, a Courtesan of the Hashimotoya House , 1886 - Interesting scene of the courtesan Shiraito of the Hashimotoya house. She is shown walking out of the doorway at left, tugging up the edge of her striped outer robe, a packet of tissues caught between her teeth. Shiraito was in love with the samurai Mondo, unaware that he was married and had two small children. His wife came to visit Shiraito at the teahouse, to confront her and complain that Mondo was neglecting his family because of her. She stands in the hallway outside, dressed in a black coat and traveling hood. Behind her, beauty escorts a drunken guest, the man's arm around her shoulders as he staggers along, the silhouettes of revelers on the shoji screens beyond. An intriguing subject with a wonderfully detailed setting, including burnishing on the black lacquer door frames and the black coat.
