A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction
Rain, 1961 - Lovely shin-hanga portrait of a beauty opening her umbrella on a rainy evening. She wears a lavender kimono bordered with small colorful squares over an aqua kimono striped with metallic silver pigment. Her hair is pulled back into a large bun, softly framing her face. A warm yellow glow comes from the windows and lanterns of the building behind her, the reflections shimmering on the wet pavement, and a blue banner with writing on it can be seen at right. The title "Rain" (ame in Japanese) is embossed in the bottom margin. Not much is known about the female artist Jinbo Tomoyo. She studied with Ito Shinsui and Hirezaki Eiho, but only produced a few bijin-ga or beauty prints. A charming image with delicate color and fine bokashi shading in the night sky. Dated 1961 (Showa 36) in right margin.
