by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Shiranui Monogatari" of the fisherman Namiroku at left and the beauty Koiso fighting with the elderly fisherman Hirekuro at the water's edge. The older man raises the end of his oar above his head with an angry grimace, ready to use it as a weapon. Koiso grabs hold of the other end of the oar while Namiroku strikes Hirekuro on the shoulder with a cased sword, a worried expression on his face. A paper lantern rests on the shore at his feet, and undulating waves fill the background. From left, the actors are Arashi Rikan III, Bando Hikosaburo IV, and Bando Shuka I. Nice expressive figures with fine bokashi shading in the background.
