Akamatsu Rinsaku - After studying Western-style painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, Akamatsu Rinsaku worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for the Asahi Shinbun newspaper in Osaka. He became a friend of the paper's publisher, Kanao Tanejiro of Bun'en-do, and contributed designs to Bun'en-do's 1917 series "Pictures of Famous Places in Osaka and Kobe." This design comes from Akamatsu's series of "Twenty-four Views of Osaka," which features street scenes, notable shrines and bridges, and scenic locations, published by Bun'en'do in 1952. His sketch-like lines and strokes of color have an immediacy and freshness, and the designs are beautifully carved and printed to capture the painterly quality of his work. Akamatsu's woodblocks are rarely seen on the market, and are a nice choice for a collector interested in modern Japanese prints.
