Series; Lacquer Sake Cups with Portraits of Actors (Haiyu Maki-e Sakazuki), 1863

Lacquer Sake Cups with Portraits of Actors - Terrific design from a fine Kunisada II series featuring kabuki actor portraits as reflected in red lacquer sake cups. The portraits are beautifully drawn with fine line work and expressive faces, set off by the vibrant red of the cup. Japanese maple leaves and curving sweeps of softly shaded blue in the background suggest leaves falling over flowing water, with embossed lines indicating the direction of the current. These wonderful designs are printed to the highest standards, and many include deluxe treatments such as burnishing or embossing. A striking format and a rarely seen series.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 9 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. Toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
