Nakamura Nakazo I as Kudo Suketsune, circa 1778

Comments - Terrific 18th century kabuki portrait of Nakamura Nakazo I as Kudo Suketsune, the villainous nobleman in the famous tale of the Soga Brothers. He stares over his shoulder with a tight-lipped frown, his brows furrowed as he grips a short sword. His yellow and gray striped kimono features delicately embossed butterflies, tucked into long pants that trail beneath his feet. A great expressive figure by this master kabuki portraitist.
