Kaga no Chiyo

Series; Stories of Wise Women and Faithful Wives, circa 1841 - 1842

Stories of Wise Women and Faithful Wives - Handsome design from a series illustrating famous women in Japan who were known for their loyalty and wisdom. These celebrated beauties are shown in scenes from daily life, with an inset cartouche filled with text detailing their virtues. From peasants and princesses to courtesans and women warriors, these lovely portraits are beautifully detailed and colored. A terrific Kuniyoshi series that is not often seen.

Kaga no Chiyo - Handsome scene of the beauty Chiyo of Kaga Province going to the well to fetch water, only to find that morning glories have grown over the well bucket lying on the ground. She smiles as she looks down with a pail in one hand, the other lifting the hem of her floral print kimono. She composed a verse reading:

The morning glories
Have taken my well bucket –
I’ll borrow water.

An attractive design with wonderful detail.
