by Yoshikazu (active circa 1850 - 1870)
Series; The Eight Virtues, 1856
Filial Piety: Soga Juro Sukenari and Soga Goro Tokimune - Dramatic image from the tale of the Soga Brothers, whose father was murdered when they were children. As young adults they avenged his death by killing his assassin during a hunting party at the foot of Mt. Fuji. In the center Soga Goro Tokimune waves his sword high above his head as he steps atop a pile of fallen warriors. One of his feet has broken through a floorboard, and an attacker grabs him around the torso as he scowls angrily. At upper left, his brother, Soga Juro Sukenari, draws back his weapon as an opponent falls to the ground before him, his leg and arm flailing. An abandoned torch and helmet lie on the ground nearby. A great, dynamic design from this rarely seen series.
