Metal: Iwai Kumesaburo III as Dote no Oroku, 1858 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Iwai Kumesaburo III as Dote no Oroku, literally "Dote of the Embankment," who works as a snake charmer in the Muko Ryogoku entertainment district in Edo. She strolls along on a dark night, holding one sleeve of her kimono up as she turns her face coyly away, the edge of her blue scarf caught between her teeth. Under her arm, she carries an elegant green robe bordered with autumn grasses and blossoms and woven garden fence panels. At left, the silhouette of statue of a Buddhist deity can be seen against the sky, along with foliage at right. Beautifully detailed with delicate embossing white areas of the under robe and soft shading in the background.
