The Record of the Great Pacification of the Keian Period, 1883 - Terrific kabuki portrait from the play "Keian Taiheiki," a drama about the Keian Uprising in 1651 which attempted to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate. Ichikawa Sadanji I plays Marubashi Chuya, a ronin who taught martial arts and co-led the failed coup. Making his way outside Edo Castle, he throws one hand up above his head, grimacing angrily as rain slants down across the night sky. With his other hand he holds a straw hat dangling over his back, wearing a rust colored coat over a blue kimono, his two swords at his side. At lower right, a dog looks up at him. The walls of the castle appear in gray silhouette along the horizon. A bold design with a large colorful figure set against a muted background. The metallic pigment used on the raindrops has oxidized to a dark tone. A great Kunichika kabuki portrait.
