The Subscription List, 1879

Comments - Handsome scene from the popular kabuki play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho) in which Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the warrior monk retainer Benkei, and his retainers attempt to sneak across the border disguised as yamabushi or mountain monks. The aristocrat Togashi, shown here in a blue kimono patterned with cranes, is charged with intercepting the party. He waves his fan angrily above his head as he frowns at the party, suspicious that the young porter is Yoshitsune. In the center, Benkei looks up with a defiant frown, holding his walking staff with both hands. He carries a portable shrine on his back, and wears a small black cap tied under his chin with a woven cord. Seated at left, Yoshitsune looks up with an innocent expression. From left, the main actors are Iwai Hanshiro as Yoshitsune, Ichikawa Danjuro as Benkei, and Ichikawa Sadanji as Togashi. A great dramatic triptych with expressive faces and excellent detail, including a burnished pattern on Togashi's black cap.
