by Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)
Comments - Charming scene of upper-class ladies playing music. The woman in the center strums a lute, smiling at her companion who plays an instrument called a niko, a two string violin that originated in China. A young girl at left places a stack of books on an elegant lacquered stand, her hair pulled back into a braid tied with a purple ribbon. Another beauty stands beside a folding screen at right holding a kokyu, an instrument similar to a shamisen but played upright with a bow. Wonderful detail in the household furnishings, with beautiful floral arrangements in attractive containers and a fringed red tablecloth on a small pedestal table in the center. A lovely subject.
