Series; One-to-One Combats at the Great Battle of Kawanakajima

Usami Suruga no Kami versus Saegusa Kageyu, 1857 - Dramatic image of Usami Suruga no kami and Saegusa Kageyu locked in hand-to-hand combat along the edge of a river. At left, Saegusa Kageyu lifts his enemy in the air as Usami Suruga no kami grabs him by the face in an effort to free himself. Each man grimaces furiously, eyes bulging with the strain as they battle. The red fringe of a personal standard flaps in the night sky at left, and abandoned weapons and a banner litter the stony shore. An incredible depiction of this physical feat, with expressive figures and fantastic detail in the armor, weapons, and hair. A lively image from this rarely seen series.
