Series; The Eight Dog Heroes of Satomi
Sawamura Chojuro V as Inumura Daikaku Masanori and Iwai Kumesaburo III as Inue Shinbei Masashi, 1847 - 1850 - Handsome kabuki scene from the famous tale of "The Eight Dog Heroes of Satomi," a story about eight samurai who were the offspring of a mystical union between Princess Fuse and a dog. Here, two of the warriors are shown in front of an ornately carved and painted temple gate. At left, Inumura Daikaku Masanori holds an object wrapped in purple cloth up in his raised hand, scowling as he looks at his brother. At right, Inue Shinbei Masashi thrusts out an offering tray with a message on it. With his other hand, he pushes a folding fan into the face of a guard trying to arrest him, who waves an iron truncheon above his head. At left, another guard grimaces as he falls to the side, one foot tucked up beneath him. Beautiful detail in the elegant setting, with a burnished geometric pattern on Masashi's black kimono.
