Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Four Actors, 1869

Comments - Handsome kabuki print featuring portraits of four actors in roles from different plays. At the top, the hero from the play "Shibaraku" looks to the side with an angry frown, his red stage makeup and flared wig adding to his fierce appearance. At right, the young Yosaburo from the play commonly known as "Kirare Yosa" is easily recognizable from his scars. He was caught in a tryst with a gang boss's mistress and was slashed all over, reducing him to a life of petty crime. Nicely composed and detailed with burnishing in the two black court caps, extremely fine line work in the hair and Yosaburo's kimono, and embossing on the white kimono collar.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 9 5/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight toning, a few creases and small thinning spot at edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
