Evening Dew: Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Saito Kuranosuke Toshizo, 1876 - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX as the samurai Saito Kuranosuke Toshimitsu, who was also known as Toshizo, wearing a straw mat as a coat as he travels at night. He wears a patterned green robe decorated with black pompoms and tied with a white sash, a dotted scarf wrapped around his head. He looks up with a frown as he pulls the edges of the mat closer together, his loose hair falling over his shoulders. A full moon is visible in the night sky, framed by the branches of a pine tree. A terrific design with wonderful detail, including extremely fine line work in the hair and bokashi shading in the background. A rare Yoshitoshi series and the first time we've seen this design.
