The Second National Industrial Exposition in Ueno Park, 1881 - Terrific illustration the Meiji Emperor and Empress visiting the Second National Industrial Exposition held in 1881 in Ueno Park. The enormous Shojo Fountain dominates the scene at right, with water splashing from an urn on the backs of colorful figures into a large scalloped basin. The Meiji Empress appears in the center, sheltered beneath a purple umbrella held by an attendant. The Emperor stands among a group of officers at right, wearing a military dress uniform and plumed hat. The elegant brick Fine Arts Museum building fills the background, framed by blossoming cherry trees. An intriguing look at this historic event, wonderfully detailed.
