Original Yoshimori (1830 - 1884) Japanese Woodblock Print
Watonai, Beauty Reading, and Otokonosuke and Giant Rat Harimaze

Comments - Interesting harimaze print with insets depicting figures, a lamp, and text. Harimaze are woodblock prints featuring several images on one page, designed to be cut apart and pasted into albums or mounted to screens. At upper left, the warrior Watonai lifts his hat with one hand while holding a torch in the other as he watches for pigment to be released into a river as a signal from his half-sister. At bottom left, the loyal retainer Otokonosuke tumbles to the floor during a struggle with the magician Nikki Danjo, who has transformed into a giant rat to steal an incriminating scroll which he holds in his mouth. A handsome and colorful design.

Artist - Yoshimori (1830 - 1884)

Image Size - 14" x 9 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight creasing and soiling, a few stains. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
